Day 1

Arusha Town - Tarangire National Park

Arusha Town - Tarangire National Park

You will arrive at the Arusha Airport and depart with your naturalist guide for the Tarangire National Park. Upon arrival, you will enjoy your first game drive in Tanzania's third-largest national park and sanctuary for the impressive population of large elephants. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. Animals can be seen gathering along the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area. Besides the elephants, you will also see lions, leopards, and cheetahs. You will take a bushwalk and have a cultural visit with the semi-nomadic tribes of the "Wambungwe Boma" and interact with the local villagers. You will learn how the tribes take care of the cattle and learn of the general knowledge of taking care of and providing for the family. Late in the afternoon, you will drive to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay.

After breakfast, you will leave the lodge, with a packed lunch, and drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will descend to the crater floor where almost every species of wildlife indigenous to East Africa including the rare black rhino can be seen. The crater contains a river, several swamps, a soda lake full of flamingos, a forest and open plains. The large bull elephants that reside here have extremely large tusks; a result of the rich mineral content of the volcanic soil and its grasses. The bottom of the crater is dotted with watering holes and shelters almost 30,000 animals in an area naturally enclosed by the slopes of the volcano. Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and is considered to be one of the Wonders of the Natural World. It is a true “Garden of Eden” and heaven for wildlife. Later in the evening, you will ascend back up the crater rim and return to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay.
