Trekking through the grasslands towards the acacia forest via the southern route, keep an eye out for giraffes and buffaloes leisurely grazing amidst the verdant vegetation. After approximately 2 hours, you'll reach the enchanting Maio Falls, where you can stretch your legs and indulge in a delightful picnic lunch. Following breakfast, your journey continues as you ascend on wooden steps along a steep track. The shift in altitude brings a refreshing drop in temperature, making the trek feel more manageable. The rainforest enveloped in low-hanging clouds creates a mystical ambiance, adding to the allure of the lush vegetation. After approximately 2 hours of uphill trekking, you'll reach "Mgongo wa Tembo" (elephant back) at an elevation of 3,200 m, offering a panoramic vista to admire and a chance to rest before continuing towards Saddle Hut (3,550 m). Along the way, you'll witness the transition of vegetation from rainforest to heather and moorland. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, you'll have the option to embark on a hike to Little Meru (3,820 m), a 1 to 1½ hour excursion offering stunning views over Arusha National Park and the distant silhouette of Kilimanjaro, approximately 80 km away. Awakening to a small snack and warm tea, you'll prepare for the final ascent illuminated by headlamps, tracing your path through bushland to Rhino Point (3,821 m). The journey becomes more demanding, occasionally requiring climbing as you follow the crater rim, traversing frozen volcanic ash and rocks. After 4 to 5 hours, you'll reach the summit, Socialist Peak, where you'll be greeted by the awe-inspiring sight of the sun rising over Mount Kilimanjaro. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, you'll commence the descent along the same route back to Saddle Hut (3,550 m), where you can replenish your energy with hot soup and tea. Once rejuvenated, you'll continue the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m). Exhausted yet content, you'll savor your evening meal and drift off to sleep, with memories of the day's vistas lingering in your thoughts. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided.

Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate

Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate

Following breakfast, you'll embark on the final leg of your journey via the "northern route" back to Momella Gate. This 2 to 3-hour trek offers another opportunity to encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, and the captivating black and white colobus monkeys. Upon reaching the gate, you'll bid farewell to your hiking crew before being transported back to Arusha.

Note: The summit stage of the trek involves a few easy but unsecured climbing passages. A strong head for heights and surefootedness are essential. In adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain, icy rocks, or thick fog, the park ranger may decide to cancel the summit attempt. We recommend against climbing Mount Meru during the rainy season in April and May.
