Like most other Rift Lakes, Lake Ndutu is alkaline; however, the water is still drinkable and used by many local wildlife. From December to April, most of the wildebeest migration is usually found on the short-grassy plains. The area is usually heavily populated with elephants, birds, and resident game.

Serengeti is well known for its healthy resident wildlife population, particularly the Big Five, which is named for the five most prized trophies hunters have taken in the past. The Serengeti is believed to hold the largest population of lions in Africa due in part to the abundance of prey species. More than 3,000 lions live in this ecosystem!
