Day 1

Arrival and Transfer to Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Arrival and Transfer to Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is a salt pan with an area of 3,900 square km. It is situated in the middle of the dry savannah of northeastern Botswana. The pan is all that remains of the formerly enormous Lake Makgadikgadi. The pans themselves are salty deserts whose only plantlife is a thin layer of blue-green algae. During the wet season, the pan becomes an important habitat for migrating animals including wildebeest and one of Africa’s biggest zebra populations, together with the large predators that prey on them. The wet season also brings migratory birds such as ducks, geese, and great white pelicans.

On arrival at Maun Airport (MUB), you will be met and transferred to the Planet Baobab Lodge which is located in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans National Park. Depending on arrival times, you will have time for an afternoon game viewing activity.

Game Viewing Activities in Savuti National Park

The Savuti area borders the delta to the west and Chobe National Park to the east, and is one of Africa's best-known big game areas. It is famous for its predators, especially its resident lion and spotted hyena populations. This is one place where one has a realistic chance of seeing cheetah, leopard, wild dog, and other predators. The upper Savuti areas are among the most beautiful in Botswana. The game viewing can be exceptional, and the wide variety of activities makes this an area not to be missed. Savuti hosts large herds of buffalo, zebra, elephant, and loads of other plains game.

You will do a game drive to Savuti and will arrive at the camp in Savuti National Park in the afternoon. After lunch and a siesta, you will do the sunset drive. Game Viewing / Transfer to Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is Botswana's first national park, and also the most biologically diverse. It is located in the north of the country and is Botswana's third-largest park, after Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Gemsbok National Park. It has one of the greatest concentrations of game in all of Africa. The park is noted for having a population of lions that prey on African elephants, mostly calves or juveniles, but even sub-adults.

Today, you will depart Savuti (soon after breakfast) and go on an en-route game drive to the Chobe National Park. You will visit the part of the Chobe that is secretly located away from the peak-season crowds at the Chobe riverfront. This is also an area where elephant and buffalo can be seen in their hundreds – an experience not to be missed. You will be at the camp at around lunchtime and after some rest, you will do a sunset game drive in the upper Chobe area - looking for the Chobe predators.

You will camp overnight with all meals and refreshments.
