By flying into Kogatende Airstrip in the Serengeti, you’ll land right at the heart of the action - just minutes away from the most thrilling Great Migration river crossings. This is the closest airstrip to the Mara River, the season's key attraction. To make your trip even easier, we can assist with booking your airfare as an optional service.
Upon arrival, your expert guide will meet you at the airstrip, and your adventure begins right away with an exciting game drive through the breathtaking northern Serengeti.
From July to September, this region comes alive with the raw energy of the migration. Herds move across the golden savannah, gathering at the riverbanks before taking the plunge into the strong currents of the Mara River. By staying near Kogatende, you’ll have a front-row seat to one of nature’s most spectacular events, witnessing these unforgettable wildlife moments up close.

Few wildlife spectacles compare to the Great Migration’s river crossings, where wildebeest and zebras face one of the most dangerous moments of their journey. As they gather at the Mara River’s edge, hesitation fills the air - uncertain hooves paw at the ground, and the herd moves restlessly, waiting for the first brave animal to take the leap.
River crossings are wild, unpredictable events, and no two experiences are ever the same. Some herds might take days to gather. On other days, a few wildebeest might venture across alone. Crossings can be surprisingly fast - sometimes lasting just 5-10 minutes - while others unfold slowly over hours.
If capturing a crossing is your top priority, it’s best to focus all your time around the Mara River, being patient and allowing nature to take its course. Your guide will position you at the best vantage points, but the experience itself is completely spontaneous - exactly what makes it so breathtaking.

For those wanting to experience the full Serengeti in a short time, the river crossings are just one part of the adventure. Serengeti offers much more. From lions lounging in the grass to cheetahs sprinting across the plains, there's always something exciting to see. You might also spot elephants, leopards, and giraffes in the wild.
On your final day, you'll fly out of Serengeti to your next destination. If you're up for a quick morning game drive, have breakfast early, and your guide will look for exciting wildlife on the way to the airstrip. If you'd prefer to take your time, enjoy breakfast and head to the airstrip for your flight. The choice is yours, and your guide will make it happen!
