Here, herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry riverbed for underground streams. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem - a smorgasbord for predators. It is the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed.

"The only living things which look as if they really belonged to it are the wild animals. Between the animals and Africa, there is an understanding that the human beings have not yet earned" - Laurens van der Post, Venture to the Interior, 1963.
Today, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Masai Mara National Reserve across the border in Kenya, protect the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth. It is one of the last great migratory systems still intact.

Serengeti National Park is well known for its healthy stock of resident wildlife, particularly the Big Five named for the 5 most prized trophies taken by hunters. The Serengeti is believed to hold the largest population of lions in Africa due in part to the abundance of prey species. More than 3,000 lions live in this ecosystem.

The migration is when a million wildebeest, each one driven by the same ancient rhythm, fulfills its instinctive role in the inescapable cycle of life. It is a frenzied 3-week bout of territorial conquests and mating and survival of the fittest as 40km (25 miles) long columns plunge through crocodile-infested waters on their annual exodus north.

The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. Please note that actually finding a crossing is very difficult and is sometimes a matter of luck. A herd can be seen next to the river and only decide to cross (or not) until a couple of days later.
