2 travelers on Start dateMachame Gate - Machame Camp
You will drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. From the park gate, you will walk through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. The short hike will have you reach the Machame Camp where you will settle in, enjoy a hot meal, and enjoy your overnight stay.

Machame Camp - Shira Camp
After breakfast, you will pack up and leave the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley and walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather reaching the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Your hike will conclude when you reach the Shira campsite. Here you will settle in, enjoy a hot meal, and enjoy your overnight stay.
Shira Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco
After breakfast you will leave the Shira Plateau and continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. Your direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, you will come to the second junction which brings you up to the Arrow Glacier. You continue down to the Barranco Hut where you will settle in, rest, enjoy dinner, and your overnight stay. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp
After breakfast, you will leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley campsite. You will pass through Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail continuing up to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this location. Here you will make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day.
Barafu Camp - Summit - Mweka Hut
You will rise very early between midnight to 2:00 am to make your way to the summit. You'll head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you may stop for a short rest and witness the most magnificent sunrise you have ever seen (weather permitting). Faster hikers who do not want to rest may continue to see the sunrise from the summit. From Stella Point, you may encounter snow on your ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. You now make your descent straight down, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down to Mweka Camp where you will stop for dinner and settle in for your overnight stay.
