Large grazing animals such as wildebeest, buffalo, gazelle and zebra that depend on the open grasslands are in the crater, attracting predators, such as the black-maned lion, leopard and hyena. The elephants found are lone males. A soda lake attracts waterbirds, including flamingos and is a suitable place for predators to make their kill. Wildly beautiful as it is, it is not surprising that the Ngorongoro Crater has been called a Garden of Eden.
