Day 1

Hotel to Machame Camp

Hotel to Machame Camp

The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate takes about 45 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

You'll depart the park gate and walk through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. You'll continue a short distance until you reach the Machame Camp.

Distance: 11km/7 mi.
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.
Habitat: Montane Forest.

Day 2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, you'll leave the glades of the rainforest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until you arrive at the Shira campsite.

Elevation: 3050m/9950ft to 3850m/12,600ft.
Distance: 5km/3 mi.
Walking Time: 4-5 hours.
Habitat: Moorland.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, you'll continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As you continue, your direction changes to the southeast towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elevation 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, you'll come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. You'll now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

After breakfast, you'll leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail.

Elevation: 4000m/13,000ft to 4050m/13,250ft.
Distance: 5km/3 mi.
Climbing Time: 3-4 hours.
Habitat: Alpine Desert.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

You'll continue up to the Barafu Camp. You have completed the south circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here you'll make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day.

Distance: 4km/2 mi.
Climbing Time: 3-4 hours.

Day 6

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), you'll continue your way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You'll head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point, you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

From Stella Point, you may encounter snow on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!

From the summit, you'll begin your descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. You'll arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy your last evening on the mountain.

Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Hotel

After breakfast, you'll continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

Monkey Adventures vehicle will be waiting for you at Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (around 60 minutes).

Distance: 10km/6 mi.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.
Habitat: Forest.

Day 8

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Distance: 120 km.
Out-of-game viewing time: 2 hours.
After breakfast, the tour begins. The first stop is Arusha town for any last-minute shopping before going on safari. Then you'll head to Tarangire National Park for a game drive with a picnic lunch at the park. Tarangire is well known for its huge elephant population and baobab trees. It forms the center of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3,000 elephants, 25000 wildebeests, 30,000 zebras, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, ostriches, warthogs, and acacia savannah. Our safari guide will drive you to every side to enjoy your game drive out of the crowd of other safari jeeps with a lot of explanations. He will drive you close to the Tarangire River looking for animals who move to the river to drink during the day time and same time is easy to see hunting over here because also predators move in the river to try to find food. Later in the evening, your safari guide will drive you to your lodge accommodation.

Day 9

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will depart for the Serengeti National Park, via the beautiful high-altitude farmlands of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands behind, you'll reach the Ngorongoro gate. You will stop for a short brief about the place and enjoy taking pictures at the gate. Then, you'll proceed to the crater viewpoint and stop again to enjoy a great view of Ngorongoro Crater with an explanation from your safari guide. You'll enjoy taking pictures. Then, you will proceed with a safari and descend into the heart of wild Africa the Serengeti National Park —with its endless plains, rolling as far as the eye can see. Then you'll go to the central area of the park one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, along with the Seronera River, which provides a source of water to this area and therefore attracts a fauna well representative of most Serengeti species. You'll arrive in time for lunch enjoy your lunch at Naabi gate then proceed with the game drive.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highland

You'll wake up early in the morning and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Then, you'll leave with a packed breakfast to make sure you will not stay hungry. You'll enjoy the game drive while you are comfortable. Here, you will have a great chance to see hunting because predators are more active during the night and early morning and they hunt a lot at that time. You will drive out of central Serengeti to the East looking for cheetahs, lions on the rock, and many other animals. The game drive will continue until early afternoon. You'll either return to your accommodation for a hot lunch or take a packed lunch with you. Then, you'll return through the Serengeti and park all your stuff. Then, you'll drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area with a game drive en route seeing more lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, and hyenas.

Day 11

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

After breakfast, your safari guide will drive you directly to Ngorongoro Crater. You will descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round supply of water and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to a wide variety of animals including herds of wildebeests, zebras, buffalos, elks, warthogs, hippos, and giant African elephants. Another big card for this national park is its dense population of predators, which includes lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the ever-elusive leopards, which sometimes require a trained eye to spot. You will visit Lake Magadi, a large shallow alkaline lake in the southwest corner which is one of the main features of the crater. Large numbers of flamingos, hippos, and other waterfowl can usually be seen here and then your safari guide will drive to Engutoku for a picnic close to the hippo pool. You can use the washroom there. In the late afternoon, you will drive back to Arusha to your accommodation.
