Kigali to Volcanoes National Park (Cultural tour)
Your guide will collect you from the Hotel for the journey to Volcanoes National Park, continuing your exploration of this "country of a thousand hills". The drive is through the fertile, rolling hills of western Rwanda. It's a fascinating journey of around four hours, depending on any stops you make en route (do ask your guide about the options) before arriving in time for almost lunch. Check in at your lodge and head for a tour of the “Gorilla Guardians’ Village. Later return for dinner and overnight.

Twin lakes tour and drive to Kibuye-Lake Kivu
As you travel south today, first visit the Burera and Ruhondo before you leave for Kivu. The forests that cover the volcanoes give way to stunning views of Lake Kivu and its Islands. The drive is around two hours – but with the flexibility to choose where and when you stop, you can spend as long as you like taking photographs or just revelling in the scenery before arriving at Cormoran Lodge, overlooking the lake.

Explore Lake Kivu
A day to enjoy the morning at Lake Kivu and a visit to the Napoleon Island. The Island has a colony of bats, a hike to a point that gives a 360 view of the lake. Return and have a relaxed afternoon at the lodge or by the lake. Dominating the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu is the sixth largest lake in Africa. Rwanda's western side is bounded by Lake Kivu, one of a string of huge freshwater lakes which lie along Africa's Great Rift Valley.

Make your way to Nyungwe Forest (Using the Congo Nile Trail
When you are done with rejuvenating, we drive on the Congo Nile trail (Along the shores of the lake) on a dirty trail and the scenes of the lake will pave way to the forests of Nyungwe. It's not a long drive – around three hours – but with the flexibility to choose where and when you stop, you can spend as long as you like taking photographs or just revelling in the scenery before arriving at Nyungwe. Check in at your lodge. You can choose to visit a tea factory around.

Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk
Trekking to see the chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest National Park can be exhilarating. While sighting them in dense forest can be challenging, to watch them cavorting in the tree tops, their all-too-human characteristics to the fore, makes this an exceptionally rewarding half-day excursion. Later in the afternoon, take a walk on the canopy bridge at the park.

To Kigali via King’s palace Museum
The drive takes you through farmland and rice fields, with lunch en route, typically reaching Kigali from Nyungwe leaving it, with its stunning forest views, after around six hours. But this is very much your trip, so if you'd like to stop for photos. You will visit the King's Palace, and this gives an interesting insight into Rwanda’s cultural history and monarchy. It's also ideally placed to break up the long journey from Nyungwe Forest.

Kigali to Akagera National Park
Today after breakfast, you'll be driven east through rolling hills and small farms with bananas and tropical fruit growing on the side of the road. It's a beautiful drive, usually arriving at Akagera Game Lodge after around three hours. Should you wish to stop, for anything interesting along the way, talk to your guide. Arrive check in, have lunch and later go for an evening game drive.

Akagera game drive and sunset boat cruise
Today you have a full day at Akagera. Absorb the beauty of Akagera on your morning drive and later the sunset cruise on Lake Ihema. Akagera’s Lake Ihema is a beautiful contrast to the rolling hills of the east of Rwanda, and the flatter plains to the north. Relax and enjoy the peace and quiet on your cruise, while watching the sunset over the lake and the national park beyond.

To Kigali and Exit
Today's journey back to Kigali gives you the chance to absorb the beauty of the surroundings as you leave Akagera. Arrive in Kigali and drive around with a main stop at the Genocide Memorial and museum. This will give you a fascinating, though sobering, insight into Rwanda's modern history. It is remarkable to learn just how far Rwanda has come in such a short period of time and it certainly adds a deeper understanding about the Rwandan people. After have lunch, and depending on your schedule you will be dropped at the airport for your exit flight.
