Trekking from Kibo Hut To summit to Horombo Hut
In the early morning, between midnight and 2:00 am, the ascent to the summit begins, navigating steep and dense scree or snow until reaching Gilman’s Point situated on the crater rim. Continuing onward, the journey ascends to Uhuru Peak. Afterward, the descent unfolds, with a pause for lunch and rest at Kibo before proceeding to the Horombo encampment. The initial phase of this climb unfolds in darkness, necessitating the use of headlamps or flashlights. The temperature will be quite cold until the descent begins, requiring all layers of warmth. Undoubtedly the most challenging segment of the trek, it involves numerous switchbacks. Progressing slowly (pole pole) with an optimistic attitude is key to overcoming this stage.
The elevation ranges from 15,400 ft/4,700 m to 19,300 ft/5,895 m during the ascent and then descends from 19,300 ft/5,895 m to 12,100 ft/3,700 m.
