Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Your 7-Day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Trek continues to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled at about 4,330 meters. The day’s distance is approximately 6 kilometers. You’ll be in the presence of Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro’s iconic formations. The campsite is beautifully situated by a glacial tarn, providing a remarkable setting for the night.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
You’ll trek to Kibo Hut, the base for your summit attempt. This segment of the journey is approximately 10 kilometers and takes you to an altitude of about 4,700 meters. The landscape becomes alpine and desolate as you approach Kibo Hut, which sits in the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.

Summit – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and back to Horombo Hut
The most challenging and rewarding day begins with an early morning ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, just before sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend to Horombo Hut, situated at an elevation of around 3,720 meters. This is a long and demanding day, covering a total distance of approximately 21 kilometers.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
The final day of your trek takes you from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate. As you descend, you’ll pass through the moorland and lush rainforest zones, covering about 27 kilometers. The vibrant vegetation and colorful flora provide a contrasting perspective of the mountain. Upon reaching the Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates and express your gratitude to your dedicated guides and porters.
