While you journey from your hotel to Soweto (around 30km or 45 minutes) David will tell you the history of Soweto, a product of apartheid and racial segregation, which functioned as a labour pool for Johannesburg. Visit the Hector Pietersen Memorial (the first child gunned down by police on 16 June 1976. Nearby, walk down Vilikazi Street, prior home to two Nobel Peace Prize Winners. Visit the first home of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. Have lunch at one of the most famous eateries and taverns in Soweto. Visit the famous Church, Regina Mundi, where you can see bullet holes in the ceiling from the time the police chased activists into it. Tour the Apartheid Museum, a chilling reminder of our violent past. And while you do all this, David is likely to have a story to tell you about many of the particular places you will pass by. It is these stories that make Soweto come alive, although you will feel its vibrant presence anyway. It's a place like no other, a true bucket-list experience.
