We leave very early in the morning to avoid the rush-hour, and stop for coffee at a laybye. The journey is about an hour and three-quarters. Arriving at the house of a famous artist, we pick up a local guideperson who can speak the language, and deal with any problems that may arise. From there we visit a number of sites in Mabhoko where mural art can be seen and the local people interacted with. This will include passing the house of the most famous Ndebele artist, Dr Esther Mahlangu, and a visit to the Catholic church which was painted by the famous Francina Ndimande, who passed away in 2013 from diabetes. After lunch, we head to a nearby settlement where a different style of art is displayed. Beadwork and other Ndebele artworks can be bought at some of the homes, as this helps sustain the artistic production of the Ndebele. Alternatively, one can visit a tourist village which displays the development of Ndebele housing styles and art over a much longer timeframe.
