Departing from Moshi, you will head to Marangu Gate to complete the necessary formalities before commencing your trek. The trail kicks off with an ascent through stunning tropical rainforest, offering glimpses of blue monkeys at the forest's upper edge. As you continue, the trail broadens, revealing picturesque hillsides until you arrive at Mandara Hut. En route, you will traverse the village of Marangu on the mountain's lower slopes before reaching the park gate to prepare for the ascent ahead. Your first afternoon's hike unfolds amidst the forest, with opportunities to spot colobus monkeys, culminating at Mandara Hut, a delightful cluster of A-frame huts nestled in a forest clearing.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Transitioning from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut entails an elevation gain from 2,700m (8,858ft) to 3,720m (12,205ft) across a distance of 12km (7,5mi), with an estimated hiking time of six to eight hours. This segment traverses through a habitat characterized by heath vegetation. The journey commences with a forest trail, gradually opening into expansive high moorland. En route, participants may be treated to their initial vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, prominent components of Kilimanjaro's summit comprising three volcanic peaks.
