Formed by the collapse of a large volcano over two million years ago, Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact caldera. It measures approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) in diameter and encompasses an area of about 260 square kilometers (100 square miles).

The crater's fertile floor supports a diverse array of ecosystems, including grasslands, swamps, forests, and a soda lake. This rich variety of habitats sustains a high density of wildlife year-round.

The crater is renowned for its exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. It's home to an estimated 25,000 large animals, including the densest population of lions in Africa.
Other commonly sighted species include elephants, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeests, hyenas, and an abundance of birdlife. The crater is also one of the best places in East Africa to see the endangered black rhinoceros.
