Damaraland to Etosha National Park

Today, you will depart for Etosha National Park, where you will spend the next three nights. Etosha is one of Africa’s biggest and best parks and is one of the main tourist attractions in Namibia. It is 22,912 km2 in size. The Etosha Pan, a shallow depression that only holds water after good rainy seasons, is 5,000 km2 in size. Etosha is known for its spectacular wildlife viewing and the waterholes that attract huge wildlife numbers in the dry season (when all the open water has dried up). 114 mammal species are found in the park, and it is the best place in the world to see black rhinos. Other wildlife found here includes elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, honey-badgers, black-faced impalas, kudu, elands, damara dik-diks, warthogs, and big herds of springboks, zebras, blue wildebeests, red hartebeests, and oryx. More than 300 species of birds can also be found here. You'll do morning and afternoon game drives and relax at the pool or camp waterhole between drives.

Day 6

Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park

We will do morning and afternoon game drives and relax at the pool or camp waterhole between excursions. Etosha National Park is Namibia's premiere wildlife viewing experience. Vegetation here ranges from dense bush to open plains, all of which attract a diversity of wildlife. In the heart of the park is the Etosha Pan —a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000 sq kilometers. The park’s landscape varies widely from the southeast to the eastern areas. The white dust and clay that make up the Etosha Pan eventually turn to reddish-brown soil, which may lead you to believe you have entered an entirely new park!

Etosha National Park

Today, you'll make your way across the park during a full morning game drive to Mushara Lodge (which is located on the eastern boundary of the park). Located in northwestern Namibia, Etosha East is a protected sanctuary within the world-renowned Etosha National Park, which is one of the most accessible game reserves in Southern Africa. Etosha East boasts vast open plains scattered with semi-arid savannah grasslands that are dotted with watering holes and secluded bush camps. An impressive 5000-square-kilometer salt pan makes up a large area of the eastern side of the park and can even be seen from space. This remote space teems with abundant wildlife such as lions, elephants, black rhinos, and giraffes, as well as a variety of birdlife (including flamingos, ostriches, eagles, hornbills, and owls).

The Caprivi, with its lush green woodland and big rivers, is completely different from what we experienced in Etosha. You should arrive at your lodge, which is situated on the banks of the mighty Okavango River, by late afternoon. The lodge is also situated right across from the buffalo section of Bwabwata National Park. Hopefully, you will see elephants, buffalo, kudu, and other wildlife coming down to the water while you enjoy a sundowner's drink. You will have a good night's rest listening to the sounds of hippos outside.
