Stretching for 50 kilometers along the base of the 600-meter high rusty-gold Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is a picturesque gem, praised by Ernest Hemingway as "the loveliest I had seen in Africa."
The compact game-viewing route through Manyara offers a miniature version of the Tanzanian safari experience.
From the entrance gate, the road meanders through a lush, jungle-like groundwater forest where large troops of baboons lounge casually along the roadside. Blue monkeys dart nimbly among the ancient mahogany trees, delicate bushbuck move cautiously through the shadows, and oversized forest hornbills honk loudly in the high canopy.

Tanzania's premier park is famed for the dramatic interactions between predators and prey. Golden-maned lion prides thrive on the abundance of grazing animals. Solitary leopards stalk the acacia trees along the Seronera River, while a significant population of cheetahs roams the southeastern plains. Remarkably, all three African jackal species can be found here, along with the spotted hyena and a variety of smaller, more elusive predators, from the insect-eating aardwolf to the striking serval cat.

The centerpiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera in the world. The crater, which formed from the collapse of a massive volcano two to three million years ago, is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and spans 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). It is estimated that the original volcano stood between 4,500 and 5,800 meters (14,800 to 19,000 feet) tall. The crater floor sits at an elevation of 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level.
