Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is a large, unbroken, and unflooded volcanic caldera located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania. Formed about 2 to 3 million years ago after a giant volcano exploded and collapsed, the crater is approximately 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and covers an area of around 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). It is renowned for its diverse ecosystem, which supports a variety of wildlife, including the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). The crater also features a soda lake called Lake Magadi, which attracts flamingos and other bird species. Ngorongoro is an important paleoanthropological site, with significant discoveries like early human fossils in the nearby Olduvai Gorge.
