Ngorongoro, a crater on the edge of the Serengeti in Tanzania, was formed by the collapse of a volcano. The crater floor lies at approximately 1700 meters, with side walls reaching heights between 400 and 600 meters, placing the crater rim at around 2300 meters. The crater spans about 20 kilometers in diameter.

Home to about 25,000 wild animals, Ngorongoro boasts the highest density of predators in Africa. The crater teems with zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, antelopes, and gazelles, which are preyed upon by lions, hyenas, and leopards. Elephants also inhabit the crater, along with hippos, which are uncommon in this region. Additionally, 10 to 15 endangered black rhinos remain within the crater. The great migration of the Serengeti herds passes through Ngorongoro as well.
