The crater was created when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself two to three million years ago. The drive down into the crater is an adventure in itself, and when you reach the crater floor, you quickly find yourself amongst large numbers of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and more than 500 bird species. The crater provides the best chance of seeing the endangered black rhinos, which can sometimes be spotted in the open grasslands. Lake Manyara is also considered the paradise of birds as it has more than 500 bird species, both indigenous and migratory birds. Animals that can be found inside the park are elephants. Buffalos can be seen roaming about the park’s woodland; tall majestic giraffes in the acacia-dotted plains are a standard attraction.
