Consider a side trip to Maundi Crater for stunning views of northern Tanzania and Kenya. Spot majestic eucalyptus trees, diverse birdlife, and playful colobus monkeys in the rainforest.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Horombo to Kibo Hut
Continuing your ascent, you leave the last water point behind and traverse the saddle of Kilimanjaro, nestled between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Initially, you'll encounter upper heathland vegetation, which gradually gives way to a terrain resembling a "moonscape." After this segment of the climb, you'll enjoy dinner, rest, and prepare for the upcoming summit ascent.

Kibo Hut to Summit Area to Horombo Hut
Between midnight and 2:00 am, your summit journey commences. Ascend steep scree or snow terrain to Gilman's Point on the crater rim. Then, continue to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point, where breathtaking views await. Capture a summit photo for memories. Descend to Kibo for lunch and rest before continuing to the Horombo camp.
Elevation change: From 4,700 meters (15,500 feet) to 5,895 meters (19,340 feet), then down to 3,700 meters (12,200 feet)

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Arusha
After breakfast, your journey begins with a gradual descent. Starting from the moorland, you'll make your way to Mandara Hut. Continuing onwards, the path winds through lush forests until you arrive at the Marangu National Park gate. Expect lower elevations to be wet and muddy, so wearing gaiters and using trekking poles is advisable for easier navigation.
Upon reaching the Marangu Gate, transportation awaits to take you to kilimanjaro airport for an evening flight back to Zanzibar, approximately a one and half-hour drive away.
