Game Drive

After a healthy breakfast, start your day by enjoying the sight of wildebeest newborns. The calving season in the Serengeti is a prime time for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers to visit. This period, typically from late January to early March, is critical and fascinating as over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks. This mass birthing strategy overwhelms predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs, who are highly active during this time, taking advantage of the abundance of vulnerable newborns. This results in dramatic wildlife interactions and a high survival struggle for the young calves.
The season is also a critical time as the Serengeti’s southern plains are lush and nutrient-rich, providing the perfect environment for the newborns to grow and gain strength. Herds are densely packed, and social behaviors within the herds are more pronounced. Mothers are particularly protective of their young, and the social bonds within groups are reinforced.
