7-Day Mt Kilimanjaro Trekking with Machame Route

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast, you’ll drive from your hotel in Moshi town (800 m) to Machame Gate (1,800 m) for registration and to start your climb. The trek will take you through the rainforest to Machame Camp (3,000 m), covering a distance of 10.75 km. The ascent takes approximately 5-6 hours, including a picnic lunch en route. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be at Machame Camp. The total altitude gained today is 1,200 m.

Machame Camp to Shira Cave Camp

After breakfast, you'll continue hiking through the heath and moorland to Shira camp- (3850m) with a picnic lunch on the way for 4-5 hours. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at the campsite. The distance covered is 5.3km and the altitude gained is 850m. This is an open camping site, and it's perfect for taking good pictures.

Shira Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Early in the morning after breakfast, you’ll start your hike to Barranco Camp (3,940 m), passing by Lava Tower (4,600 m) to aid in acclimatization. The trek takes about 6-7 hours, including a picnic lunch along the way. You’ll cover a distance of 10.75 km. The altitude gain from the starting point is 750 m, with a descent of 660 m from Lava Tower to Barranco Camp. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be at Barranco Camp.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you’ll climb the Barranco Camp (4,250 m) to reach Karanga Camp (4,000 m). The hike takes about 3-4 hours, with a distance of 4.25 km covered. You'll enjoy a hot lunch, rest, and take a walk around the camp to help with acclimatization. The altitude gain is 60 m. This is the shortest hike to Karanga Valley, where you'll have dinner and overnight at the camp.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

You’ll have breakfast around 8:30 am before continuing your hike through the heath and moorland to Barafu Camp (4,600 m). This section takes about 3-4 hours, covering a distance of 4.25 km with an altitude gain of 600 m. After arriving, you’ll enjoy a hot lunch, rest, and have an early dinner.

You’ll then get a few hours of sleep before waking up around 11:00 pm to pack essentials for the summit. Hot drinks and snacks will be provided before you start your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at midnight. The summit hike takes approximately 6-7 hours, covering 4.86 km with an altitude gain of 1,295 m.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak transfer to Mweka Camp

The descent from Uhuru Peak to Barafu Camp takes about 3 hours, where you'll enjoy a well-deserved breakfast and rest for a few hours. After lunch, you'll continue your descent through the alpine desert, heath, and moorland to Mweka Camp (3,100 m), located at the edge of the rainforest. The total distance covered from Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp is 11.5 km, with an altitude loss of 2,795 m.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate then Moshi Town

After breakfast, you'll hike through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,800 m), a journey that takes about 3-4 hours. You’ll cover a distance of 9.1 km, with an altitude loss of 1,400 m. At the gate, you'll receive your certificate of achievement for reaching the summit. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in town, where you can enjoy a hot shower, lunch, and some well-deserved rest. This marks the end of your climb.
