Morning: Arrive in Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region, either by flight or road. Mekele is the gateway to the Danakil Depression and meet your tour guide and driver, who will brief you about the trip. Ensure you have everything you need, including plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. Then depart from Mekele towards Danakil Depression driving through arid landscapes, small villages, and a stretch of the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy picnic lunch along the way and continue your journey to Hamed Ela, a remote village that serves as the base for excursions into the Danakil Depression.
Arrive in Hamed Ela in the evening and settle into the basic accommodations..
At sunset sunset, head out to the nearby salt flats to witness a stunning sunset over the endless white plains.
Return to Hamed Ela for a traditional Ethiopian dinner prepared by your guides or local hosts.
After dinner, Spend the night in Hamed Ela under the stars, enjoying the quiet of the desert.

Explore the salt flats and Dallol
Early morning rise to visit the salt flats of Lake Asale, where local Afar people extract salt in the traditional way. You’ll see the salt miners cutting large blocks of salt and loading them onto camel caravans for transport.
Then drive to Dallol, one of the hottest places on Earth and the lowest point in Ethiopia. Explore the vibrant, multi-colored sulfur springs, acidic pools, and bizarre rock formations created by geothermal activity. The area looks like an alien landscape with its bright yellows, oranges, and greens.
Take time to walk around Dallol and capture photographs of the unique mineral formations, including salt mounds, sulfur lakes, and hydrothermal deposits.
In the afternoon: Enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade, as there are no facilities in this remote area.
After lunch, visit the salt canyons and caves nearby, and if time allows, observe the traditional camel caravans transporting salt to the highlands and finally return to Hamed Ela for dinner and overnight stay.

Erta Ale Volcano
Early Morning drive to Erta Ale Volcano, one of the few continuously active lava lakes in the world. The drive will take several hours, passing through rugged desert terrain.
Afternoon arrival at the base camp near the Erta Ale volcano, located in the Afar Triangle. Here, you’ll prepare for the ascent to the volcano.
Rest and have lunch at the base camp while preparing for the evening trek. Trek to the summit of Erta Ale in the late afternoon or early evening to avoid the intense heat of the day. The hike takes around 3-4 hours over rocky and barren terrain.
After arrival at the rim of the volcano just after sunset, you’ll witness the spectacular sight of the glowing lava lake. The fiery red glow of the molten lava against the night sky is an unforgettable experience.
Overnight: Spend the night camping on the rim of the volcano, with the option to watch the lava lake throughout the night.
