Day 1
Rongai Gate / Nalemoru to Simba Camp
Rongai Gate / Nalemoru to Simba Camp
In the morning, our team will pick you up from your hotel and drive to the Marangu Gate, located approximately 1.8 km away. After completing the necessary park registration, we will proceed to the Nalemoru Gate, which is just under 2 km from there. This presents a great opportunity to meet your crew, and a comforting hot lunch will be served at the gate. The adventure to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro begins with a twisting path that crosses a field of maize. Upon entering the dense forest, trekkers will walk along the moist floor beneath the ember canopies. Above, striking blue monkeys and contrasting black-and-white colobus monkeys can be spotted alongside adorable bush babies. The trek lasts three to four hours before we spend the night at Simba Camp (2650 m), where comprehensive camping facilities are available.

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Caves
In the morning, the journey towards Kibo will resume. At the second ancient cave, an appetizing hot lunch awaits. Following this meal, we will trek through a brief section of the barren dunes of the moorland before continuing amid the heather vegetation zone, which is adorned with ethereal, enormous lobelias. A high possibility exists for viewing the breathtaking display of Kibo Peak. Additionally, there may be opportunities to spot jackals and the occasional buffalo; however, there is no need to panic as your guide accompanies you at all times. Upon reaching the Kikelewa Caves camp at 3600 m, you can unwind for the remaining hours of the day.

Kikelewa Caves (3600m) to Mawenzi Tarn (4330m)
Breakfast will be served at the campsite. Our day begins on a short-inclined pasture that leads to an area of wilderness. A low desert environment will replace the limited vegetation. We will arrive at the Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330m) where a delectable hot lunch will be served. There is a possibility of small excursions for acclimatization taking place but you are likely spending the rest of the day lounging at the campsite.

Day 4
Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut
Note that the trail progressively becomes steeper and stonier as we advance further away from the Mawenzi Tarn Hut. We will travel up a desolate site that leads to ‘The Saddle’ – an extensive lunar lava stone landscape that stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo. The journey is complimented by the marvellous views of the towering upper regions of the Kilimanjaro. Our trek will come to an end when we reach the Kibo Huts (4703m) and a steaming hot meal will be served in the afternoon. You can relax for the remainder of the day. We recommend that you try to get to bed early so you are revitalized for the climb to the summit at midnight.

Day 5
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Our summit ascent begins at midnight, marking the longest and most challenging day of the trek. Initially, the trail features a steep slope leading to Hans Meyer Cave, where it narrows into a single-file path. The route to Gillman’s Point (5685 m) presents rocky terrain and requires some climbing—this section is the trek’s toughest. After reaching Gillman’s Point, a two-hour hike will take you to Uhuru Peak (5895 m). At Uhuru, the first peach-hued rays illuminate Mawenzi Peaks, showcasing your achievement. A brief stop at Uhuru allows for celebration before we descend to Kibo Hut for a much-needed rest. Following this, we will continue on to the Horombo Huts, where you’ll be relieved and delighted to find your sleeping bag waiting.

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
After breakfast, we will descend to the Marangu gate. On our journey, we will encounter the Mandara Hut and travel through the lush rainforest once again. When we get to the Marangu gate, you will be awarded with a certificate to prove that you completed the 6-day Rongai Route. After the brief festivities with your porters conclude, you will be transported back to the hotel, where a piping hot shower, a soft mattress, and fresh clothes await. You may even want to try one or two Kilimanjaro beers! We will transfer you to Kilimanjaro Airport, from where you will connect your flight back home. If you’ve decided to go on a safari—well, that’s another adventure, and we’ll be happy to arrange it for you!
