Mti Mkubwa (2800m) to Shira 1 Camp (3500m)

Leaving the forest, the trail gradually climbs into the moorland zone, with expansive views of the Shira Plateau. The trail passes through shrubland and volcanic rock formations, arriving at Shira 1 Camp.
Shira 1 Camp (3500m) to Shira 2 Camp (3850m)
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Habitat: Moorland
This day is an easy trek across the Shira Plateau, allowing more time to acclimatize and enjoy the incredible views. The landscape opens up, offering panoramas of Mount Meru in the distance. You'll spend the night at Shira 2 Camp.

Shira 2 Camp (3850m) to Barranco Camp (3900m)
Hiking time: 7-8 hours
Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles
Habitat: Semi-desert
This is a critical acclimatization day. The trail takes you through semi-desert landscapes and up to Lava Tower, where you'll reach the highest point so far at 4,640m. Afterward, you descend to Barranco Camp, where you will sleep at a lower elevation. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is key to successful acclimatization.

Barranco Camp (3900m) to Barafu Camp (4673m)
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 5 km / 3.1 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Start your day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a non-technical scramble that offers exhilarating views. The trail then undulates through valleys and ridges, offering varied scenery as you make your way to Barafu Camp. Barafu Camp, the base camp for the final summit push. You’ll arrive in the early afternoon to rest and prepare for the summit night. Spend the evening relaxing and hydrating before an early sleep.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Mweka (3080m)
Hiking time: 10-14 hours (6-7 hours ascent, 4-7 hours descent)
Distance: 19 km / 11.8 miles (4.5 km ascent, 13.5 km descent)
Habitat: Arctic zone (summit), Alpine desert (descent)
At midnight, you’ll begin the final ascent towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The trail is steep and challenging as you ascend through heavy scree. After reaching the summit for sunrise, you'll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
