Start your day at 6AM as you meet your guide at the Rusizi I border of Rwanda and DRC. After completing border formalities, prepare for an exciting day ahead.

The highlight of the day will be trekking into the jungle to meet the incredible mountain gorillas. A guided briefing will prepare you for the experience, which may involve up to 2 hours of hiking each way. The path can be challenging, but the reward of spending time with these magnificent creatures is truly priceless.

After your encounter with the gorillas, take a moment to rest before visiting a community project in Bukavu – the Panzi Hospital. This remarkable facility specializes in treating individuals impacted by violence, particularly those who have been victims of sexual abuse.

As the day comes to a close, return to the vibrant city of Bukavu for a well-deserved overnight stay. Reflect on the day's adventures and get ready for more incredible experiences to come on your journey.

Boat cruise to Idjwi Island - Pygmies Experience

This day takes us to Bukavu where we embark on a thrilling speed boat ride to the beautiful island of Idjwi in Lake Kivu, also known as the ‘Island of Peace’ since it has never experienced any civil disruption unlike other places in this Volatile Kivu region. The island is home to two tribes including the minority indigenous Pygmy community that claims original ownership of the island and the majority Bahavus who shifted came around the 17th Century. Captivating views of fishing boats that line the horizon will welcome you to this magnificent yet remote island where life is generally humble and medieval.

One of the highlights of our visit to Idjwi is meeting the local coffee farmers who use traditional farming methods to produce some of the best coffee in the world.

After exploring the coffee farms, we will hop on a local motor to visit a pygmy village, immersing ourselves in the local village life on the island.

Today, we will embark on another boat ride back to Bukavu, where we will explore the town with a city tour. We will visit a bustling local market, admire the architecture of Place de l’Indépendance, and marvel at the art deco style Our Lady of Peace Cathedral before settling in for another overnight stay in Bukavu.
