It was formed some 35,000 years ago when the Kunene River’s gradient changed towards the Atlantic owing to tectonic movements. The saltpan is 120km long and 72km wide and is mainly fed by rainfall and episodic water supply from a natural drainage system called the Cuvelai. The park covers an area of approximately 22,912 square km, reduced from 100,000 square km. It is home to some 340 bird species, 114 mammal species, and 110 reptile species. Etosha was proclaimed a game reserve in 1907, and tourism activities began in the 1940’s.

Covering an area of over 3 million hectares and a buffer zone of 899,500 hectares, the site comprises 2 dune systems; an ancient semi-consolidated one overlain by a younger active one. The desert dunes are formed by transporting materials thousands of kilometres from the hinterland carried by river, ocean currents and wind.
