Machame Gate To Machame Camp

After breakfast, we depart from Moshi at 9AM and drive for 45 minutes to the Machame Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro. After registering with the national park, we’ll enjoy lunch at the gate before starting our hike around noon. Our trail winds through the lush rainforest as we ascend a ridge, and we’ll continue a short distance through the heather until we reach Machame Camp.

Machame Camp To Shira Caves

We’ll start the day with an early wake-up and breakfast. The first part of today’s trek features a gradual ascent that becomes steeper as we climb out of the jungle, offering our first stunning views of the Shira Plateau. After reaching camp and enjoying lunch, we can explore the Shira Caves or embark on an acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower. We’ll return to camp for dinner and some well-deserved rest.

Shira Caves To Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. Shortly after the Lava tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude. We now continue down to the Barranco Camp at an altitude. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Barranco Camp To Karanga Camp To Barafu Camp

After breakfast, we set off for Barranco, tackling a steep ridge as we ascend the Barranco Wall toward the Karanga Valley campsite. From Karanga, we’ll head to the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail and continue our ascent to Barafu Hut. At this point, you’ll have completed the South Circuit, taking in breathtaking views of the summit from various angles. Here, we’ll set up camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for summit day, with the stunning peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo visible from our location.

Barafu Camp To Summit To Mweka Camp

Our schedule for ‘Summit Day’ is quite different from previous days. We’ll rise at 11 PM and enjoy tea and biscuits at 11:30 PM before departing at midnight. The trek begins with a long, challenging climb from Barafu at 4,556 meters to Stella Point at 5,756 meters, where you’ll encounter some scree, making the ascent even tougher.

From Stella Point, there’s an additional 139 meters to climb, requiring about 45 minutes of walking to reach the summit. Our goal is to arrive at the top (5,895 meters) around 7 AM, where we’ll celebrate, take precious photos, and savor this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After summiting, we’ll descend back to Barafu (4,556 meters) for a couple of hours of rest and brunch before continuing our descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters) at 1:30 PM. We expect to arrive by 5 PM and will have dinner at 7 PM.

Mweka Camp To Mweka Gate

On our last day of this trekking, you continue the descent to Mweka Gate and collect the summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village.
