After breakfast the search for rhinos begins on the Park’s bushveld with luxuriant jungle, coursing rivers, verdant swamps, khaki grasslands and gaunt termite mounds.
Meru National Park is one of the least visited and therefore one of the least spoiled of Kenya’s National Parks.
Covering an area of 870 km2, the national park has 3 distinct micro-ecosystems (bushland, wet woodlands, and savannah) which support a diverse range of flora and fauna.
The park is famous for its connection to the orphaned lioness Elsa, who was hand-reared there by George and Joy Adamson, who subsequently wrote the popular non-fictional book Born Free, turned into a movie in 1966. Both Joy Adamson, and Elsa the lioness, are buried in Meru National Park.
The park also has an 84 square kilometers rhino sanctuary housing over 60 black and white rhino. We will focus on visiting the sanctuary to see the rhinos.
