Day 1

Trekking

Trekking

After breakfast and a briefing from your guide, you’ll depart Moshi at 9 AM for a 45-minute drive to the Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro's eastern side. After registering with the national park, you'll start your hike at 10:30 AM. As you trek through the rainforest, keep an eye out for towering Eucalyptus trees, diverse birdlife, and Colobus monkeys. The lower elevations can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. Shorts and t-shirts should suffice, but be sure to keep your rain gear and warmer clothing close at hand.

You'll stop for lunch midway and arrive at the Mandara Huts between 2 and 3 PM. Once there, unpack, relax, and enjoy some tea or coffee. A 15-minute side trip to Maundi Crater offers stunning views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Dinner will be served at 7 PM, and you’ll have access to bathrooms with running water.

Horombo Huts

Wake up to breakfast at 7:30 AM and pack for your next trek. You’ll break camp by 8:30 AM and hike for an hour through rainforest glades before following an ascending path through heathland, where you can spot giant lobelias and groundsels. Continue upward into open moorlands, where small shrubs dominate the landscape. You’ll stop for lunch along the way, taking in breathtaking views of Mawenzi.

Arriving at the Horombo Huts by 3 PM, you'll have a clear view of Kibo's summit. Take some time to rest, unpack, and prepare for dinner. Bathrooms with running water are available. You may begin to feel the effects of altitude at this point, and to aid your acclimatization, you have the option to spend an extra day resting at Horombo or to climb to a basecamp below Kibo’s sub-peak, Mawenzi.

Climbing to kibo huts

Start your day with breakfast as usual, but if you wake up early, you’ll have a great opportunity for stunning sunrise photos. The morning hike takes you through the diminishing heathland, which gradually transforms into a moonscape as you reach the expansive saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo.

When you stop for lunch, take a moment to appreciate the impressive summit route up Kibo that you'll be tackling in just a few hours. Be mindful of any signs of altitude sickness during this part of the trek. Please note that there is no running water at the Kibo Huts.

Horombo Huts

You have the option to add an extra day at the Horombo Huts (3,690 m/12,100 ft), allowing for a full day and a second night of acclimatization. During this day, you can choose to relax at the huts or take a leisurely walk up to the Mawenzi basecamp before returning to Horombo. This additional time will aid your acclimatization and enhance your understanding of the mountain’s weather and altitude. After this rest day, you’ll continue your trek to the Kibo Huts on the fourth day in preparation for your midnight ascent to the summit.

Day 5

Gilman's Point | Uhuru Peak

Gilman's Point | Uhuru Peak

Wake up at midnight for a light breakfast as you prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly after sunrise. You'll set off at 1 AM, making your way up steep scree or possibly snow. Aim to reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m (18,640 ft) between 5 and 7 AM, where stunning views of the legendary crater and its ice caps await you.

Afterward, continue hiking for another two hours along the crater rim to reach Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak, by 9 AM. Standing at Africa’s highest point, you’d have to travel over 3,000 miles toward the Himalayas to find a taller peak! Don’t forget to capture a photo at the summit to share with friends.

Following your time at the summit, begin your descent back to the Kibo Huts for lunch and some well-deserved rest. After collecting your things, you'll cross the saddle back to the Horombo Huts. Enjoy dinner and get some much-needed sleep!
