Momella Gate
Momella Gate
Starting from Momella Gate (1,500 m) in the late morning, the trail quickly leads you through open grasslands, offering opportunities for game viewing. Keep an eye out for buffalo, warthogs, elephants, and more. You'll then begin a steady climb through montane forest, with a stop for lunch at the famous “Fig Tree.”
After lunch, the trek continues through less dense forest, where you can spot various birds and monkeys, including the striking black and white Colobus. By mid-afternoon, you’ll enjoy your first close-up views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. You’ll reach Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), nestled in a picturesque grassy glade, in time to soak in the last rays of the afternoon sun and admire the beautiful vistas over the plains towards Kilimanjaro. Miriakamba Hut
Miriakamba Hut
The trek from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a shorter day, but it features a steep and sustained climb. Starting through a beautiful, lush montane forest, the path continues past the halfway point at Elephant Ridge, ascending through giant heather and other moorland vegetation until you reach Saddle Hut (3,570 m) in time for lunch.
The afternoon is yours to rest and take in the views. For those feeling energetic, a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820 m) offers spectacular views just before sunset. The hike takes about 3 to 5 hours, with an ascent of 1,056 m. Saddle Hut is similar to Miriakamba but requires collecting water from a stream about 10 minutes away.

Day 3
Rhino Point
Rhino Point
Begin your day early, around 2:00 AM, to make a steep ascent to Rhino Point (3,800 m). From there, the path continues along an undulating ridge of ash and rock, leading you to Cobra Point (4,350 m) just in time for sunrise. The views are breathtaking: the cliffs of the crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating above the morning clouds, and, if the weather permits, the Rift Valley.
From Cobra Point, the summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m) is just an hour away via a superb yet often steep path. The return to Rhino Point, illuminated by the sharp morning light, takes you along a narrow ridge between the outer sloping wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall—one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa.
You’ll then make a swift descent through open grasslands and mixed forest, with a good chance of spotting wildlife along the way This trail offers excellent views back towards the crater and over the plains of the National Park.
