After lunch, you continue west, stopping by the Garub waterhole to catch a glimpse of the feral horses of the Namib. Your journey continues west, where you will have your first stop at Kolmanskop, a once vibrant town where diamonds were discovered in 1908. It is now a ghost town being swallowed by the sand after it was abandoned when richer diamond fields were found in the south. Sossusvlei & Dead Vlei Excursions
The following 2 days are spent photographing Dead Vlei, Dune 45, the Sesriem Canyon or the dune corridor. The name Dead Vlei refers to the trees in the marsh that died about 900 years ago when the Tsauchab River was cut off by the dunes. Named for its proximity to the Sesriem gate, Dune 45 is said to be one of the most photographed dunes in the world. It is approximately 170m high and composed of 5-million-year-old sand that has turned red due to age and rusting of the grains. Sesriem gets its name from early settlers who, when collecting water from the canyon, had to connect 6 thongs to lower a bucket into the canyon.
