Hiking time: 5-7 hours, 7 miles
After departing from Arusha, you'll drive to Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park, passing through the village of Machame to meet your climbing crew at the Machame Gate. As you begin your gentle ascent, the trail meanders through the lush afromontane rainforest that adorns Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. Moss and lichen hang from tall branches, while tree ferns nestle in soft beds below. The forest floor bursts with vibrant blooms from begonias, busy lizzie impatiens, and violas, which thrive year-round. Along the way, keep an eye and ear out for various bird species, as well as colobus and blue monkeys among other forest inhabitants. Your first campsite, Machame Camp, is nestled amidst towering giant heather.

Shira Camp
Altitude gain: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft
Distance: 3 miles
Duration: Approx. 4-6 hours
Leaving the lush rainforest behind, you’ll follow an ascending path along a steep ridge that leads into the heather-clad moorland, known as the heath zone. Here, as vegetation thins, you’ll encounter striking helichrysum and lobelia, the few resilient plants that thrive in this harsh landscape. Along the way, you can observe various geological features, including lava tubes and glacial valleys. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed on the trail today. Continuing up a rocky ridge, you’ll arrive at the Shira Plateau, where you’ll be greeted by views of the stunning glaciers on the Western Breach. After a short hike, you'll reach Shira Camp, where your tent offers a breathtaking view of the snow-dusted Kibo peaks. Enjoy your overnight stay at Shira Camp!
Barranco Camp
Barranco Camp
Altitude gain: 12,500 ft to 15,223 ft (Lava Tower), then down to 13,044 ft
Distance: 7 km
Duration: 6-8 hours
Today features a "walk-high, sleep-low" strategy for acclimatization. You'll ascend into the alpine desert, heading toward the main peak of Kibo, where the western glaciers come into clear view. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. For those feeling adventurous, there’s an optional climb of the 300-foot Lava Tower before you descend to Barranco Camp in the afternoon. As you make your way, you’ll pass through the enchanting ‘Garden of the Senecios,’ filled with giant groundsel and lobelias. The Barranco Valley is considered one of the most beautiful areas on the trail. Although it’s a long day, the next time you reach this altitude will be in two days, making it an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Overnight at Barranco Camp.
