Continue your journey to Dallol, where you'll explore the unique landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. Visit Dallol, one of the lowest points on Earth at 116 meters below sea level, and experience its vibrant salt formations.
Take part in an excursion to Lake Assal and observe camel caravans (note: camel caravans may not be available in July, August, and early September). Engage with the Afar people as you walk through the area. The drive from Semera to Hamed Ela is about 400 km, and if time allows, you may see the sunset at Lake Assal.

Hamed Ela to Lake Assal, Dallol, and Erta Ale
Hamed Ela to Lake Assal, where you'll witness a breathtaking sunrise over this unique saltwater lake, located 125 meters below sea level. Take the opportunity to explore the lake's vibrant salt flats and distinctive geological features, and engage with local Afar people to learn about their salt harvesting methods. Depart for Dallol, renowned as one of the most extreme environments on Earth. Experience incredible landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, including colorful mineral formations and geothermal features. Spend time at the Dallol crater, marveling at the surreal scenery of hot springs, sulfur deposits, and salt formations—perfect for capturing stunning photographs of this otherworldly landscape. Finally, begin your journey to Erta Ale, one of the few volcanoes globally with a permanent lava lake. Arrive at the base in Dodom and prepare for your trek to the summit. Hike to the rim of Erta Ale to witness the mesmerizing lava lake, enjoying the dramatic lava activity.

Erta Ale to Lake Afdera and Semera
Experience an early morning sunrise at Erta Ale, taking a short walk to explore the northern, southern, and central pits. The main pit crater measures 200 m deep and 350 m across, with a sub-circular and three-tiered structure. The smaller southern pit is 65 m wide and about 100 m deep.
Descend from Erta Ale around 9:00 AM and return to Dodom for breakfast at approximately 07:00. You will arrive back at camp by 10:30, where you can relax.
If conditions permit, drive to Lake Giulietti (also known as Lake Afrera), a picturesque saltwater lake located more than 100 meters below sea level. Explore the salt flats where the Afar people harvest salt through evaporation.
Continue your journey to Semera, where you will board your flight back to Addis Ababa.
