Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The journey begins with a drive from Arusha to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Along the way, you’ll pass through the village of Machame, nestled on the lower slopes of the mountain.
Once you leave the park gate, your trek into the rainforest begins. You’ll follow a winding trail up a ridge. The lower sections of the trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended.
Continue along the trail through the lush rainforest until you reach Machame Camp, where you’ll set up camp for the night. Your accommodation will be in a spacious, comfortable tent with a private toilet and hot shower, while the staff takes care of all camp chores.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast before leaving the rainforest behind and following an ascending path. You’ll continue along the trail, crossing a small valley and climbing a steep, rocky ridge blanketed in heather until you reach the ridge’s end.
The path then turns west, guiding you into a river gorge, where you can take a break and enjoy dinner. You’ll conclude the day at the Shira campsite, where you’ll spend the night. Your accommodation will be in a spacious, comfortable tent featuring a private toilet and hot shower, with all camp chores handled by the staff.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Start your day by heading east from the Shira Plateau, ascending along a ridge. You’ll pass the junction that leads to Kibo Peak.
As you continue, your route shifts southeast toward the Lava Tower, often called the “Shark’s Tooth.” After visiting the Lava Tower, you’ll reach a second junction that takes you up to Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000 feet.
Next, you’ll descend to the Barranco Hut, situated at 13,000 feet. Here, you can rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night. Although you’ll be at the same elevation as when you started, this day is vital for acclimatization, helping your body prepare for the summit. Your accommodation will be in a spacious, comfortable tent with a private toilet and hot shower, with all camp chores managed by the staff.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, begin your day by departing from Barranco. You'll navigate a steep ridge, tackling the challenging Barranco Wall, until you reach the Karanga Valley campsite for lunch.
From Karanga, follow the trail to the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail, then continue ascending until you arrive at Barafu Hut.
Congratulations, you’ve now completed the South Circuit, offering unique views of the summit from various angles. Set up camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the exciting summit day ahead.
While at Barafu Hut, take in the stunning vistas of both Mawenzi and Kibo, the two prominent peaks of Kilimanjaro. Your accommodation will be in a spacious, comfortable tent with a private toilet and hot shower, with all camp chores managed by the staff.
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Begin your summit climb between midnight and 12 AM, heading northwest through challenging scree terrain towards Stella Point on the crater rim.
Take a brief break at Stella Point (18,600 ft) and, if the weather permits, enjoy a breathtaking sunrise. Then continue your ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and in Africa.
After reaching the summit, begin your descent directly to Mweka Hut, stopping for lunch at Barafu along the way. Gaiters and trekking poles are essential for navigating the loose gravel on your descent.
As you reach Mweka Camp in the late afternoon, you may encounter mist or rain in the upper forest. Enjoy your final dinner on the mountain that evening, followed by a well-deserved rest. Your accommodation will be in a spacious, comfortable tent with a private toilet and hot shower, with all camp chores handled by the staff.
