Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Between midnight and two in the morning, we make our way to the peak between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Heading towards Stella Point on the crater rim, you ascend through severe scree in a northwesterly direction. This is the most physically and mentally taxing portion of the walk.

At Stella Point (18,600 feet), you will take a little break and, weather permitting, be treated to the most breathtaking dawn you have probably ever seen. You could find snow at every turn on the hour-long ascent from Stella Point to the peak. You have reached Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Hikers that get up early will be able to see the sunrise from the summit.
From the summit, we now descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping for lunch at Barafu. Trekking poles and gaiters are advised for the loose gravel descent. We enjoy our farewell meal on the mountain later in the evening, followed by a well-earned nap.
