Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (2,800m / 9,170ft)
After a three-hour drive from Moshi, you’ll arrive at Londorossi Park Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro for registration and park fee payment. From there, you'll continue to the trailhead at Lemosho Glades and begin your trek through the rainforest. In some areas, the lush vegetation is so untouched that it spills over the narrow track. The flora and fauna here are more diverse than on the other popular routes. Today's trek follows the less-traveled Chamber's Route, and in about 3 to 4 hours, you'll reach your camp in the rainforest at Mti Mkubwa, or Big Tree.

Mti Mkumbwa to Shira 1 Camp
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m / 11,500ft)
After breakfast, you'll pack a lunch box and begin your ascent, traversing the remaining rainforest toward the expansive moorland zone. A perfect lunch spot awaits you in a stunning valley just outside the Shira Crater at around 3,050m (10,000ft). After enjoying your meal, you’ll cross into the Shira Caldera, a rarely visited high-altitude desert plateau. Shira is one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones, filled with lava from Kibo Peak. The crater rim shows signs of erosion from weather and volcanic activity. Today, you'll also catch your first close glimpse of Kibo, the dramatic summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,700m / 12,200ft)
After breakfast, you'll continue your hike east across the Shira Plateau, passing the impressive Shira Cathedral on your way to Shira 2 Camp. You'll gain just 210m (700ft) in elevation, allowing for a gradual acclimatization to the altitude. The views of the plateau are truly breathtaking!

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Hut
Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Hut (3,900m / 12,675ft)
Today marks the final of the "easy days" with a stunning 6-hour hike. You’ll pass the Lava Tower along the southern flank of Kibo before slowly descending to Barranco, a spectacular campsite located at the base of Kibo Peak, which looms majestically above you. Although your camp is only 140m (465ft) higher than last night, you'll have trekked just over 4,300m (14,000ft) today. This day is particularly valuable for acclimatization.
Barranco Hut to Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp
Baranco Hut to Karanga Valley to Barafu (4,560m / 14,950ft)
After breakfast, your first challenge awaits: ascending the Barranco Wall, a 183m (600ft) rock face. Once you've conquered the wall, the trail becomes easier, revealing stunning views of the crags and crevasses of the jagged peaks to your left. You'll then descend into the Karanga Valley, where you’ll stop for lunch before continuing on to Barafu Camp (Base Camp). Some trekkers with time constraints may opt to skip the overnight stay here.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,900m / 19,340ft) to Mweka Camp
Dress warmly, as we’ll begin our ascent around midnight on the mountain’s steepest and most challenging section. The moon will provide enough light for our climb, and we aim to reach Stella Point by sunrise, which takes about 6 hours. As dawn breaks, the rugged Mawenzi peak is a breathtaking sight from the crater rim, with the Kibo saddle still shrouded in darkness below and the ice walls of the crater looming ahead. If you’re feeling strong, continue on to Uhuru Peak, which will take an additional 1 to 2 hours. This is the highest point in Africa and the world’s highest solitary peak at 5,900m (19,340ft).
Today will be the most challenging of your trek, as you will ascend 1,100m (3,600ft) and then descend 2,200m (7,200ft) over the course of 12 to 15 hours. While the descent is less strenuous, taking breaks along the way is advisable as you make your way down to Mweka Camp, which takes about 3 to 4 hours from the summit.
