Machame Camp-Shira1
You'll start your day early with breakfast and pack up for the trek ahead. The hike begins with an hour through the rainforest, transitioning into open moorlands characterized by sparse vegetation and small shrubs. After trekking for about 2 hours in the moorland, you'll stop for lunch and a brief rest before continuing up to the Shira Plateau, where you'll be treated to your first views of the Western Breach and its breathtaking glaciers.
Shira 1-Lawa Tower To Barranco Camp
After breakfast and packing up, you’ll begin your trek east along a steep path that leads above the last remnants of Kilimanjaro’s vegetation. After 5-6 hours, you’ll arrive at the famous Lava Tower (15,190 ft / 3,950 m). Here, you'll pause for lunch and some valuable acclimatization before descending for 2 hours below the Western Breach to Barranco Camp. Day 3’s hike provides excellent photo opportunities, especially if the walls are glistening with ice. While waiting for dinner, you'll have the chance to witness one of the most stunning sunsets you’ve ever seen as the sun sets over the valley. Be sure to listen to your body and keep your guide informed of any signs of altitude sicknes.

Barranco Camp-Karanga Camp
After a night spent below the Great Barranco Wall, it's time to take on this impressive feature. Don’t worry—it’s easier than it appears! You’ll continue your ascent until you reach just below the Heim Glacier, then descend through the Karanga Valley. This is the last opportunity for your porters to gather water, as they will collect all necessary supplies for the remainder of the ascent here. You’ll settle in at Karanga Camp, where you can enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, take some time to explore lightly or relax while soaking in the stunning views of Mawenzi’s towering spires.

Karanga Camp-Barafu Camp
After breakfast, you’ll trek east, crossing several ridges and valleys until you connect with the Mweka Route. Turning left, you'll continue up the ridge for an hour to reach Barafu Hut. When you arrive at camp, you’ll find your tent set up on a rocky ridge exposed to high winds, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the area before it gets dark. Keep your headlamp or flashlight handy in case you need to leave the tent after sunset. Prepare your gear by replacing batteries for your headlamp and camera, and aim to get to bed by 7 PM to rest before your summit attempt!
Barafu Camp-Uhuru Peak To Mweka Camp
From Barafu, you’ll embark on your ascent to the peak. The climb lasts about 6 hours through thick scree, navigating multiple switchbacks between the Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers until you reach Stella Point (18,650 ft / 5,685 m). This section is often regarded as the most challenging part of the trek. Depending on your pace, you may catch a glimpse of the breathtaking sunrise during your short rest here. Although you’ll feel fatigued, it’s crucial to keep moving due to the extreme cold. At Stella Point, you’ll connect with the final stretch of the Marangu Route. You’ll hike along the rim for another 1-2 hours until you reach your ultimate destination: Uhuru Peak. Congratulations! You’re now standing on the Roof of Africa! Take some time to snap photos with the iconic Uhuru Peak sign, but be sure to begin your descent soon to allow for adequate rest at Barafu Camp.

After registering at the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates—green for those who reached Stella Point and gold for those who made it to Uhuru Peak. If the road is too muddy for vehicles, you’ll continue hiking for another hour to Mweka Village, which is 3 km away. There, you can enjoy a hot lunch before being driven back to Moshi, where you can finally take your first hot shower in days!
