Karura Forest is located north of central Nairobi, gazetted in 1932. It provides a quiet and tranquil environment that inhabits more than 200 bird species. Possible bird encounters include Mountain Wagtail, Yellow Bishop, spectacled weaver, African Crowned Eagle, Brown-chested Alethe, Narina Trogon, White-backed Duck, Hartlaub’s Turaco, African Black Duck and Red-chested Flufftail.
After here, we shall go birding in Nairobi National Park. It offers a remarkable diversity of birdlife, with a recorded count of over 500 species. With expansive open plains set against the backdrop of the city’s impressive skyline, it stands as the sole national park bordering a metropolis. Secretary Bird, Black-winged Plover, Pangani Longclaw, Jackson’s Widowbird, Kori Bustard, Hartlaub’s Bustard, Common Nightingale, Northern Pied Babbler, White-tailed Lark, Somali Short-toed Lark, Red-throated Tit, Speke’s Weaver, Martial Eagle, African Quail-finch, Zebra Waxbill, and Harlequin Quail can be found here.

From Nairobi City to Masai Mara
Driving time is 5-6 hours. We shall do an afternoon birding. The Mara, the northern portion of the magnificent Serengeti system, offers spectacular vistas over flat-topped acacia and grassy plains riddled with ungulates and other animals. The reserve is famous Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, African Elephants, gazelles, and other wildlife. For birding we should be rewarded with views of many large raptors and vultures that gather at the kills, as well as storks, Kori Bustard, Southern Ground-Hornbill, Temminck’s Courser, Sooty Chat, and Schalow’s Turaco, Secretary Bird, Black-winged Plover, Pangani Longclaw, Jackson’s Widowbird, Kori Bustard, Hartlaub’s Bustard etc.

From Mara to Nairobi National Park
Drive time is 5-6 hours. The park is located on the southern outskirts of the city and is one of Africa’s smallest national parks (117 sq km).
