Summit Adventure: Ras Dashen (summit day)
Today marks the exhilarating ascent to Ras Dashen, the highest peak in Ethiopia. The trek spans approximately sixteen kilometers and will take ten to eleven hours. We begin by climbing steeply through picturesque barley fields and fallow land, gradually leaving behind the vegetation zone as we reach the mountain steppe at around 3700 meters.
As we traverse the ridges in the shadow of Ras Dashen, the path flattens, allowing us to catch our breath and enjoy the stunning scenery. Just before Dashen Pass, at about 4250 meters, we will encounter an impressive moraine—glacial debris that was formed between 20,000 and 14,000 years ago during the last ice age, when small ice caps adorned the Simien Mountains.
The final stretch to the summit requires some exciting scrambling over large boulders. Upon reaching the top at 4543 meters, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views that extend over ten thousand square kilometers. To the west, the steep faces of peaks.
