Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
After spending a restful night and enjoying a hearty breakfast, we will bid farewell to the rainforest and begin our ascent from 2,785m (9,137ft) to 3,895m (12,779ft), gaining an altitude of 1,110m (3,640ft). The ascending path gradually leaves the forest behind as it unfolds. As we steadily ascend, we will be treated to expansive views and approach the rim of the Shira Plateau. As we gain elevation, you will notice a temperature drop, marking the transition to a new and captivating landscape.

Shira 1 to Moir Hut
On this day, you will be ascending from 3,895m (12,779ft) to 3,986m (13,077ft), gaining 91m (300ft) in elevation. Even though you will end the day at a similar elevation, this day is essential for acclimatization. You will start from Shira Plateau and head east up a ridge, passing the junction toward Kibo Peak. Then, continue southeast to the Lava Tower, also known as the "Shark's Tooth," which stands at 4,650m (15,250ft). After the tower, you will find a second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier. Descend to overnight at Barranco Camp, marking a crucial phase in acclimatization.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you will ascend from 3,986m (13,077ft) to 4,034m (13,253ft), gaining 48m (160ft) in elevation. You will navigate a steep ridge to conquer the exhilarating Barranco Wall, which leads to the Karanga Valley and the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Karanga Camp to Barafu
Ascending from 4,034m (13,253ft) to 4,662m (15,295ft), you will gain 628m (260ft). When you reach Barafu Camp, it marks the completion of the South Circuit. This circuit offers diverse and breathtaking views of the summit from various angles. After an early dinner, resting is crucial as preparation for summit night takes precedence. You will stay overnight at Barafu Camp, building anticipation for the challenging ascent to come.

Barafu Summit to Mweka Hut
Ascend from 4,662m (15,295ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft), gaining 1,233m (40,45ft). Descend to 3,090m (10,150ft), resulting in an altitude loss of 2,789m (9,150ft).
Continue towards the summit between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, maintaining focus on the looming sense of accomplishment. Employ switchback motions northwesterly, ascending through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. Witness an awe-inspiring sunrise during a brief rest, with faster hikers possibly catching it from the summit. Expect snow on the remaining one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Mweka to Arusha
After breakfast, start the 10km (6mi) descent from 3,090m (10,150ft) to 1,646m (5,400ft) through the rainforest. The hike takes about three to four hours. At the Mweka Park gate, you will get your summit certificates. Expect wet and muddy conditions at lower elevations, so wear gaiters and use trekking poles. Dress in shorts, t-shirts, rain gear, and warmer clothing for comfort.
Once you reach the gate, it will take you another hour to reach Mweka Village. A vehicle will be waiting there to take you back to Arusha, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro expedition!
