After breakfast, your guide and mountain crew will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you to Machame Gate at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro (1,800m), where you’ll obtain climbing permits and register with search and rescue. Once formalities are complete, you’ll start your trek through lush rainforest vegetation toward Machame Camp at 3,010m. This initial 11 km hike takes 4-6 hours, winding through dense forest where rain showers are frequent, so keep your rain gear handy. Midway, you’ll pause for lunch before continuing upward. The gradient eases as the rainforest gives way to giant heather near camp. If evening clouds permit, you may catch your first glimpse of Kibo Peak’s glaciated dome.
