Our day begins by descending into the Great Barranco, a massive ravine. We then ascend steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It's not a technical climb, but it's long and exhausting. We pass beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers as we head towards the Karanga valley. From there, we have a steep climb up to our night's camp at Karanga, situated at 3963m. For those feeling strong, we will take a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to approximately 4200m before descending back to camp for the night.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After a comfortable night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, we embark on our journey to Barafu camp, which is located at an elevation of 4640m. The ascent will take us through barren scree slopes, devoid of any vegetation, making it a challenging and steep walk, especially due to the high altitude. Upon reaching the campsite, we replenish ourselves with food and spend the rest of the afternoon resting in preparation for the long journey ahead. It is crucial to stay hydrated and warm in these conditions. We have an early dinner and then attempt to get some rest, as we will be waking up between 11 pm and 12 am to initiate our climb towards the summit.

At around midnight, we start our ascent to the summit glaciers by walking steeply upwards. Although we will be climbing the scree for 4 to 5 hours, we will gain an incredible amount of height over a short distance. The views are breathtakingly spectacular. We should reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) just as the first rays of the sun hit us. Within the crater, we will be surrounded by spectacular ice cliffs, and the views of jagged Mawenzi Peak and beyond will be simply breathtaking.
After another hour of walking, we will reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We will then begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on a scree slope and tracking back to Barafu Camp for breakfast.
