Marangu Gate

You'll embark on the Marangu Route adventure with an elevation gain from 1830m/6000ft to 2740m/9000ft. Departing from Moshi, a scenic 1-hour drive takes you through the charming Village of Marangu to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. There, amidst the hustle and bustle of preparations, permits are patiently issued for the upcoming journey. As crews gear up, the trail winds through the stunning rainforest, offering captivating scenery and insights into local flora, fauna, and natural wildlife. Navigating through this lush terrain, be prepared for muddy and slippery conditions at the lower elevations, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended for a safe and enjoyable trek.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

As the elevation rises from 2740m/9000ft to 3690m/12,100ft, the Marangu Route unveils a second leg of its journey. After a restful night's sleep and a nourishing breakfast, the trek advances beyond the rainforest, ascending through a heathland adorned with giant lobelias and groundsels. The path unfolds amidst open moorlands, where small shrubs dominate the landscape. A pause for lunch at a scenic vantage point offers breathtaking views of Mawenzi. Continuing the ascent, the trail reaches the Horombo Huts in the late afternoon, nestled beneath the awe-inspiring Kibo Summit viewpoint. As temperatures begin to drop, the surroundings transform, setting the stage for an enchanting night on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Ascending from 3690m/12,100ft to 4695m/15,400ft marks the next leg of the Marangu Route expedition. Following a hearty breakfast, the trail winds through diminishing heathland, gradually transitioning into a surreal moonscape as you enter the expansive saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. After pausing for a well-deserved lunch, you'll have the opportunity to survey the impending summit climb up Kibo. As you traverse this surprisingly vast saddle, the enormity of the summit challenge becomes palpable, setting the stage for the awe-inspiring journey ahead.

Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut to Summit

You'll ascend from 4695m/15,400ft to the breathtaking 5895m/19,340ft on the Marangu Route, followed by a descent to 3690m/12,100ft. Starting between midnight and 2:00 a.m., the summit push is mentally and physically demanding, navigating switchbacks through scree and snow toward Gillman’s Point. A brief rest offers a view of a magnificent sunrise, possibly seen from the summit. The final hour to Uhuru Peak involves a snowy ascent, marking the highest point on Kilimanjaro and the African continent. You'll descend steeply to Mweka Camp, with a lunch stop at Barafu. Gaiters and poles are crucial for the challenging terrain. A well-deserved rest at Mweka Camp concludes this extraordinary journey.
