Day 1

Meet up & Arrival at Base Camp

Meet up & Arrival at Base Camp

You will need to arrive at the Skeleton Coast town of Swakopmund in the morning of the day that your expedition begins. Naturecrazi can organize a transfer from the airport to the briefing venue (not included). This briefing venue location will be advised on inquiry.

We then depart from Swakopmund at approximately 12 noon and drive to Damaraland. The drive to the base camp, located in an incredibly beautiful spot on the edge of the Ugabe River, takes approximately four hours and transport is included. The rustic desert base camp is set in the shade of towering trees and sandstone cliffs. Your home for the afternoon and evening will be a tree house platform, an open-sided wooden structure, where you'll experience the crisp desert air and the distant sounds of wildlife.

Enjoy a dinner cooked over the fire. Once the sun is down, the night sky fills with millions of stars. Learn about local beliefs of the night sky and constellations.

Day 2-4

Elephant Conservation and more

Elephant Conservation and more

Following a restful night in the tree house at base camp, we’ll begin our trek on foot through the breathtaking desert landscape. For the next three nights you’ll sleep wild under the stars in remote locations, your movements dictated by the elephants.

During the day you’ll track and learn about desert-dwelling elephants, the unique challenges they face, and the arising human-wildlife conflict in the area. Meet the community members who live side by side with the desert’s wildlife.

Your devoted expedition guides will impart their incredible knowledge on tracking skills, elephant behavior and their complex society, as well as information on all the other wildlife and flora to be found in this unique ecosystem.

As this is a semi-participation tour, you may assist in building elephant water protection walls, preparing your own bedding, and cooking meals. Listen to campfire stories about the stars and night sky, and discuss elephant conservation and Namibia’s history and culture.
