3-Day Big 5 Safari in Welgevonden GR

Arrival & Transfer to the Lodge

Your 3-day safari begins at the East Gate of Welgevonden Game Reserve with a 30-minute transfer to the lodge in a 4x4 vehicle (which is as good as a game drive). Pick-up times are between 12h00 and 12h45 daily.

For self-driving, Welgevonden is a 2.5-hour (about 270km) drive from Johannesburg. Your vehicle must be parked at the East Gate entrance, and arrival must be coordinated with the pickup times. For charter flights, there are 2 airstrips on the reserve (flight duration ±40 minutes from JNB). Transfers, either by road or air, can be arranged on request.

On arrival at Inzalo Safari Lodge, you'll check in and be guided to one of 5 luxury tented suites, each of which features a private viewing deck with a plunge pool and outdoor shower overlooking the Sterkstroom River, en-suite bathrooms, a lounge with a fully stocked mini-bar (for own account), and tea/coffee making facilities (included in rate).

After relaxing and a game drive sundowner, dinner will be served in the lodge.

Big 5 Game Viewing & 5-Star Cuisine

Arise with the sun and start your day with a game drive across the mountainous bushveld of Welgevonden. You're likely to spot a selection of over 65 mammal species, including the Big Five (buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, and rhinoceros). However, it is the rare and unusual species like cheetah, brown hyaena, caracal, aardwolf and aardvark that make game drives here exceptionally exciting. Wildlife sightings are never overcrowded as the reserve is not open to day visitors.

After enjoying a sumptuous breakfast and before or after lunch at the lodge, you can book additional activities (at your own expense), like on-site birding, river walks, track and sign identification, bush walks, visits to San paintings, bush picnics and more.

Your late afternoon game drive will traverse a different part of the reserve and include a stop for sundowners at a waterhole or elevated site for scenic views. Back at Inzalo Lodge, a campfire dinner may be served in the boma area (weather dependent).

Morning Game Drive & Departure

After an early morning game drive and brunch at Inzalo Lodge, you'll check out by 11h00 for the game drive transfer back to the East Gate entrance of Welgevonden Game Reserve (or the airstrip if a charter flight has been booked). From here, you can either self-drive back to Johannesburg or extend your trip for 2-nights at Madikwe Game Reserve (see our listing offer).
