From Stone Town we have a 30-minute boat or dhow drive to the prison island. The island was built in 1893 as a prison for slaves, but later it was used as the quarantine camp for traders who wanted to enter Zanzibar. They had to pass there for medical check before entering Zanzibar. You can visit the ruins of prisons, some of which now serve as bars and restaurants. Now the Island is popular for its endangered giant land tortoises brought from Mauritius in 1820
The Stone Town Tour
This 2-hours walking tour will give you the chance to explore the old stone town with its history, monuments and culture. The tour will start at the public market which was built in 1904. As you walk into the narrow streets of Stone Town, you will see and take several pictures of the street and buildings. Then you will be guided to the former slave market which now is the Anglican Cathedral which was constructed after the abolition of the slave market in 1873 by Dr. David Livingstone.
