Between 1885 and 1887, young men who served as servants in King Mwanga's court were put to death for refusing to denounce their faith. They were among the first Christian converts in Uganda. They were sentenced to death, bound, tortured and were dragged over days until the execution site at Namugongo. Some died midway. All were finally killed at Namugongo on 3rd June 1886! Every 3rd June and days preceding it, over 1 million people pay pilgrimage at Namugongo.
You will visit Munyonyo Basilica, then King Mwanga's palace where the sentencing was made. Follow their trail and take a detour to visit the Buganda Kingdom parliament and Kings palace – Lubiri.
You will also visit the two iconic cathedrals- Lubaga Catholic Cathedral and Namirembe Anglican Cathedral whose histories are linked to the martyrs 'story. End your day with a visit to the Kasubi Royal Tombs where King Mwanga who ordered the martyrs death is buried.

Kampala to Namugongo Martyrs Museum
You will be picked from your hotel to visit St Balikuddembe Market in downtown Kampala where two martyrs were killed en route. Follow the trail to Kisenyi and Old Kampala Catholic parish where another two were put to death in great pain. You will then follow the route through Kamuli in Kireka before visiting the Namugongo Catholic Martyrs Shrine. This iconic worship place is where the lead page and martyr Charles Lwanga was murdered and is buried. Continue to Kiyanja where 13 Catholic and 12 Anglican martyrs were put to death by burning and the remains buried in amass grave still in existence to date. A museum reconstructs their last moments.
